Cops to monitor 30 accident hotspots during Op Selamat for CNY

MELAKA: Police have earmarked 30 accident hotspots throughout the country during Op Selamat for Chinese New Year 2023 which will be heavily monitored during the road safety campaign.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the hotspots were at major highways, federal and state roads, nationwide.

“These hotspots have seen a rise in the number of road accidents, so we will be extra vigilant to bring down the figures this year’,” he said after launching Op Selamat from Jan 18 to Jan 27 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration at the Ayer Keroh Rest and Recreational Area of the North-South Expressway in Ayer Keroh here on Friday (Jan 13).

Razarudin said motorcyclists make up 64% of accidents reported among motorists throughout the country.

He also noted that heavy vehicles also contributed to fatal accidents and traffic congestion although they made up only 8% of road users.

Razarudin said the operation would involve a total of 6,559 traffic policemen and police officers.

“We anticipate two million vehicles on our roads during the festive season, especially between Jan 19 to Jan 24,” he added.
